The Ancient Origins of Chess
The Birth of Chess
Africas relationship to chess is a topic worthy of the respectful commentary of history! As the popular knowledge stream understands today, the origins of chess are complex and debated among historians. While there is no definitive answer, it is generally agreed that chess originated in India, in Gupta Empire. Historians tell us the game, originally called Chaturanga, was developed around the 6th century and was a precursor to several modern games, including chess.
Chaturanga: The Ancestor of Chess
Chaturanga, which translates to 'four divisions [of the military]' – namely, infantry, cavalry, elephants, and chariotry, represented by the pawn, knight, bishop, and rook respectively, was played on an 8x8 uncheckered board. The game was played between two players, with each controlling a set of pieces that were moved based on strict rules.
The Spread of Chess
From India, the game of chess spread to Persia, where it was known as Shatranj. The rules of Shatranj were modified slightly from those of Chaturanga, and the pieces took on some of the forms that we recognize in modern chess.
Chess Travels Westward
As the Islamic empires expanded, so did the game of chess. It was introduced to the Islamic world and subsequently to the southern parts of Europe, reaching Spain by the 10th century. Historians say the Moors, inhabitants of the Maghreb, Sicily, and the Iberian Peninsula, played a crucial role in introducing the game to Europe.
Evolution into Modern Chess
In the late 15th century, the game underwent a major transformation in Europe that led to the version of chess we know today. This included changes in the moves of the pawn and the queen. The queen, in particular, became the most powerful piece on the board, capable of moving any number of squares in any direction.
Rules Standardization
Over the centuries, regional variations of the game evolved, but it was not until the 19th century that the rules were standardized. This was largely due to the establishment of the World Chess Federation (FIDE) in 1924, which formalized the international rules of chess.

Chess is universally recognized as a game of strategy, intelligence, and skill. Its enduring popularity is a testament to its profound depth and complexity. From its ancient origins in India, it has spread across the globe, captivating millions of players of all ages.
